The Heal With Love Foundation is a Not For Profit Foundation whose purpose is to provide reimbursement for lost wages and/or living expenses incurred by kidney donors in connection with transplant surgery in accordance with NOTA, (National Organ Transplantation Act) (As amended by the Charlie W. Norwood Living Organ Donation Act – January 2008) Section 274e. “The term “valuable consideration” (legal term for "pay") does not include the … lost wages incurred by the donor of a human organ in connection with the donation of the organ.”
Although, typically, the recipient's insurance will cover the cost of the screening and surgery, the donor must provide their own financial resources to cover their living expenses such as mortgage or rent payments, utilities and food. Most companies do not provide paid leave for this surgery, so the donor has to cover their time off by using up vacation days and any savings they may have. No one should have to make a choice between saving a life and paying their bills!
Currently, the available resources to provide support to organ donors during the healing process are practically non-existent. Because of this, there are people who would be willing to provide the gift of life to someone in need, but are prohibited from doing so simply because they cannot afford to lose their income for the 3-6 weeks needed to recover from the surgery.
